Help on using Travel Pictures' Search facility

Ands & Ors

Search words or phrases are separated with the search terms "or" and "and". e.g. "New York and shop" would find all images of shops in New York. While cat or dog will find all images of cats or dogs. By default the words are "anded" together so a search for "cat dog" will find only pictures that have both a cat and a dog in them. Generally, it is better to search for just one term at a time.

Whole Words

By default the search engine looks for partial word matches. e.g. "York" will find all images of "Yorkshire" as well as York and New York. If you wish to turn this feature off, click on the "Match whole words" check box just above the search field.

Exclude Words

If you find that you are getting too many images back for your search query, try using the "not" feature. e.g. If you are looking for images of a hotel called Paris but don't know which town it is in. Try "Paris not France".

Search Within

After each search we leave the term you entered in the search box. So if you wish to be more specific just add the extra words or maybe click on the "Match whole words" check box and try the search again. If you delete the last search term, you can still search within the last result by simply clickinh on the "Search within" check box just aboveb the search field.

Search Tips

  • Don't use punctuation. i.e. use USA not U.S.A. The search engine will remove most punctuation but assumes a space where the punctuation was. So St.Lucia will find images of "St Lucia" but U.S.A. will search for images that have three keywords that start with U, S and A.
  • Use our Visual Category search to browse through our categories.
  • Use the Advanced search to enter difficult search terms
